Arbitrum serves as a layer-two (L2) scaling solution for Ethereum, employing optimistic rollups to enhance speed, scalability, and cost-effectiveness on the Ethereum network. Leveraging Ethereum's security and compatibility, Arbitrum achieves higher throughput and reduced fees by offloading most computation and storage tasks off-chain. The platform's governance is facilitated by its native token, ARB. Recently, Offchain Labs, the team behind Arbitrum, announced the transition to a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) structure known as the Arbitrum DAO. ARB holders now have voting rights on proposals regarding feature enhancements, protocol upgrades, fund allocation, and the selection of a Security Council. Arbitrum's roadmap for 2023 is ambitious and includes the launch of its own layer-three solution called Orbit, support for deploying programs written in popular programming languages like Rust and C++, expansion of the validator set to include more independent institutional validators, and transitioning its protocol to layer two with Arbitrum One. In a highly anticipated move, Arbitrum announced an airdrop of ARB on March 16, 2023. This airdrop rewards early users and DAOs building on Arbitrum, with 12.75% of the total supply to be distributed. Recipients were allocated tokens based on their interaction with the Arbitrum network until a cutoff date of March 1, 2023, with the token generation event scheduled for March 23, 2023.
