ZEN serves as the governance and utility token for Horizen, a network of blockchains boasting zero-knowledge capabilities and powered by the industry's largest node infrastructure. Facilitating blockchain interoperability is the Zendoo protocol, which leverages SNARK verification, enabling complete flexibility in sidechain type, consensus, and speed. The cryptographic verification of interconnected chains provides immense scalability, with the network currently supporting up to 10,000 sidechains and a throughput limit of 10,000,000 transactions per second (TPS). Zendoo transforms Horizen into a permissionless network of blockchains, empowering developers to deploy their blockchains within the ecosystem using a range of software development kits (SDKs). In 2023, the ecosystem team introduced Horizen EON, a public proof-of-stake sidechain and an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible smart contracting platform. This advancement enables developers to efficiently build and deploy decentralized applications (dApps) within the Horizen ecosystem while leveraging the Ethereum ecosystem. Since the launch of Horizen EON, DeFi projects such as SpookySwap, Ascent Exchange, and Yuzu have seamlessly integrated into the Horizen ecosystem. Horizen's native cryptocurrency, ZEN, is a mineable Proof-of-Work (PoW) coin listed on major exchanges such as Coinbase and Binance. ZEN can be staked to participate in Horizen's extensive network of nearly 50,000 full nodes. Although ZEN previously operated as a privacy token, following ZenIP 42204 in June 2023, the network underwent changes, removing its existing privacy features to align with a vision of adaptability and responsible, scalable growth.
