Qtum, pronounced "quantum," stands as a proof-of-stake (PoS) smart contract open-source blockchain platform and value transfer protocol. Its objective is to amalgamate the advantages of Bitcoin and Ethereum within a single chain. Built upon Bitcoin's UTXO transaction model, Qtum incorporates the capability for smart contract execution and decentralized applications (DApps). Recently, the platform expanded its support to encompass DeFi applications. As of March 2021, over 20 tokens have been created on the Qtum blockchain. The project was unveiled in March 2016 and conducted an initial coin offering (ICO) a year later, in March 2017, which garnered its founders $15 million USD. The Qtum main chain was officially launched on September 13, 2017. Initially issued as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, the Qtum coin transitioned to its native blockchain with the launch of the mainnet.
