Helium (HNT) operates as a decentralized blockchain-based network designed for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Introduced in July 2019, the Helium mainnet facilitates communication among low-powered wireless devices, enabling data transmission across its network of nodes. These nodes, known as Hotspots, comprise a blend of a wireless gateway and a blockchain mining device. Participants who maintain nodes consequently engage in mining activities and accrue rewards in Helium's native cryptocurrency token, HNT. Helium's overarching objective is to modernize IoT communication, addressing shortcomings in existing infrastructure since its inception in 2013.
