ENS facilitates the conversion of human-readable Ethereum addresses, such as john.eth, into the machine-readable alphanumeric codes commonly utilized in wallets like Metamask. Conversely, it also allows for the reverse conversion, associating metadata and machine-readable addresses with human-readable Ethereum addresses. ENS aims to enhance the accessibility and comprehensibility of the Ethereum-based web for humans, akin to how the Domain Name Service (DNS) improves accessibility on the internet. Similar to DNS, ENS employs a hierarchical naming system comprised of dot-separated domains, with domain owners retaining full control over their subdomains. The launch of ENS included a highly successful retroactive airdrop in November 2021, rewarding users who had registered addresses prior to the project's token launch. However, in February 2022, it faced criticism following apparently homophobic tweets made by its director of operations.
